Why Am I Bleeding After My Tooth Was Removed?

Why Am I Bleeding After My Tooth Was Removed?

Sometimes after a tooth extraction, patients may notice bleeding in the area where the tooth was removed. While this can be concerning, it’s often a normal part of the healing process. The amount and duration of bleeding depend on various factors, including the type of extraction performed and the individual's health. At The Ricco Dental Group, we aim to ensure you have the information you need to feel confident during your recovery.

How Much Bleeding Is Normal?

A small amount of bleeding or oozing for 24-48 hours after an extraction is completely normal. This is especially common if the procedure involves surgically removing a broken or deeply embedded tooth. However, excessively heavy or prolonged bleeding should prompt a visit to your dentist. Signs such as a mouthful of blood, bleeding that lasts longer than three days, or symptoms like dizziness or faintness are reasons to contact your dentist immediately to ensure proper healing.

What Causes Excessive Bleeding?

Certain medical conditions or lifestyle factors can increase your risk of excessive bleeding after a tooth extraction. Common causes include clotting disorders such as Hemophilia or medications that thin the blood, including aspirin, Warfarin, and Plavix. Additionally, certain dietary supplements, such as garlic and ginseng, can also contribute. Lifestyle habits like smoking, consuming alcohol, eating hard foods, or engaging in strenuous physical activity immediately after the procedure can dislodge blood clots and lead to renewed bleeding.

If you are taking medication or supplements that could increase your bleeding risk, it’s important to inform your dentist before your procedure so they can take the necessary precautions.

What Can Help Stop the Bleeding?

For mild bleeding, biting down on a piece of gauze for 20-30 minutes usually helps form a blood clot and stop bleeding. If this isn’t effective, a warm tea bag (specifically black tea) wrapped in gauze can be used instead, as the tannic acid in tea promotes clotting. Avoid smoking, alcohol, vigorous rinsing, or eating crunchy foods for at least 24 hours to help protect the clot and encourage healing.

Some patients may notice bleeding the next morning after sleeping, as their tongue might disturb the clot. If this happens, the process of applying and biting down on gauze may need to be repeated.

When to See Your Dentist

If bleeding remains uncontrolled or persists for longer than 48 hours, visiting your dentist is the best course of action. At The Ricco Dental Group, we can perform in-office procedures like cleaning the extraction site, placing hemostatic materials to control bleeding, or stitching the wound to promote closure. Advanced techniques like laser cauterization may also be used to ensure the area heals properly.

FAQs About General Dentistry

How do I prepare for a dental extraction?

Before your procedure, make sure to share your full medical history and a list of medications or supplements you’re taking with your dentist. Follow all pre-operative instructions given by your dental team, and consider arranging for someone to drive you home if sedation will be used.

What should I avoid after a tooth extraction?

Avoid smoking, drinking alcohol, vigorous rinsing, and chewing hard foods for at least 24 hours post-extraction. These actions can interfere with the formation of a stable blood clot and delay the healing process.

At The Ricco Dental Group, we work hard to make every dental experience as comfortable and successful as possible. Whether you need general care or a complex procedure, our skilled team is here to serve you. If you’re ready to take the next step in your oral health, schedule an appointment with us today.
